The hill town that was there before Florence. Etruscan Fiesole looked down on the Arno valley for centuries before Rome, and later Florence, eclipsed it. Its archaeological area holds a well-preserved Roman theatre still used for summer performances, along with Roman baths and an Etruscan temple, stacked layers of a town that kept being rebuilt. From the terrace the whole of Florence lies below in the haze. The Medici built a villa here to escape the city they ran. Older, quieter and higher than its famous neighbour.
