Aosta, founded as Augusta Praetoria in 25 BC for Augustus's veterans, keeps its Roman street grid, gates and walls, and the tall façade of its theatre rises against a backdrop of snow peaks. The Arch of Augustus still spans a street; a Roman bridge still carries traffic. Set where Italy meets France and Switzerland, Aosta is a pocket of imperial Rome dropped into an Alpine valley, the legionary town still legible under the modern one.
