An Umbrian hill town layered from the Romans to the Middle Ages, crowned by one of Italy's boldest bridges. Spoleto keeps a Roman theatre and house, an early church, and a cathedral with an apse frescoed by Filippo Lippi, who is buried inside. Above the gorge behind the town strides the Ponte delle Torri, a colossal 14th-century bridge-aqueduct on ten tall arches, over 200 metres long, walkable and vertiginous. A fortress guards the height. Since 1958 the town has filled each summer with the arts festival that made its name known again.
