rocca, Rocca Estense di Trassilico

At the top of a steep hill, the Rocca Estense di Trassilico commands a 360-degree view: from the Serchio valley and the northern Apennines down to the peaks of the Apuane Alps. This medieval fortress, built to watch over a wide territory, was once a self-contained community. Its circular tower, ‘la tonda’, anchored a defensive wall that enclosed a now-vanished cluster of buildings. Two gates, one to the east and one to the west, gave entry.

Within the walls were lodgings for the podestà, the notary and the chamberlain, plus quarters for soldiers. Inside the tower, a tiny cell held a prisoner upright, movement prevented by two iron bars. By 1524, the governor of Garfagnana, Ludovico Ariosto, found the fortress in such ruin that he doubted repair was worthwhile. It was restored almost a century later, but the sense of a place once essential, then abandoned, still clings to these stone walls.
