Rocca Malatestiana

A fortress built of tufa, rising from the summit of a hill, its polygonal plan enclosing a single courtyard. The entire perimeter of the walls is covered by a sloping base, or scarpa, a compact surface of exposed brick. To the north, this base rises about nine metres; to the south, overlooking Piazza Cavour, it reaches seven. The southern wall is interrupted by a spur-shaped bastion and a great tower; between them, the curtain wall still shows its original relieving arches. Only faint traces remain of the clock tower to the east. You enter by a ramp from Via Malatesta, enclosed between the north wall and a partly rebuilt curtain. The entrance is a round-arched portal, its tapering jambs and archivolt finished with a keystone of white stone, quarried from the now-closed caves of Montecudruzzo. Above the archivolt, two small, illegible plaques of the same material.
