Porta S. Maria

Porta S. Maria is the principal gate of the old city, the necessary passage into the historic centre. It is a double-arched structure, its perimeter walls built of limestone, now rendered over with plaster. The roofs are pitched, covered with terracotta tiles. The outer arch, a fine semicircular span of squared stone blocks, is asymmetrically topped by a small portico with three arched openings. The inner arch is also semicircular. City gates of this kind in Italy were often both defensive thresholds and symbols of civic authority, marking the boundary between the controlled order within and the world beyond. This one, with its sturdy stonework and oddly placed upper portico, has the practical, unshowy character of a structure built for use rather than display; a functional hinge between country and town, now worn smooth by centuries of passage.
