Porta Pié la Terra

Porta Pié la Terra is a gate built into a three-storey building of trapezoidal plan, its load-bearing walls rendered in plastered stone. The whole structure is capped with a pitched roof. Originally, this building and its neighbours formed part of the old town walls, distinguished by a characteristic battered base, a wall that slopes inward as it rises.

The vaulted passage through the gate takes two forms: a full round arch on the street side, and a depressed, segmental arch on the inner, village-facing side. A short stone ramp, or cordonata, runs through the gateway, while access from the street is by a stone staircase set transversely against the adjacent building. It is a practical, unshowy piece of defensive architecture, repurposed over time into a lived-in part of the urban fabric.
