Populonia, Piombino

The only major Etruscan city built right on the sea, and the industrial heart of the ancient Tyrrhenian. Populonia smelted iron from the island of Elba on such a scale that its beaches turned black with slag, and its necropolis was buried under the waste of centuries of furnaces. When 20th-century industry mined that slag for its remaining metal, it uncovered the tombs beneath, domed and drum-shaped chambers now standing again by the Gulf of Baratti. A rare place to stand among Etruscan graves with the sea a few metres away.
