Pompeii

On an August afternoon in AD 79, Vesuvius buried Pompeii under metres of ash in hours, and in doing so preserved it. A whole Roman town survives here: bakeries with bread still in the ovens, election slogans on the walls, a brothel with its price list, plaster casts of people caught mid-flight. Rediscovered in 1748, Pompeii taught Europe what Roman daily life actually looked like, down to the graffiti. It remains one of the largest archaeological sites in the world, and new rooms are still being uncovered today.
