On the wooded slopes above Sirolo, the Picene necropolis known as I Pini di Sirolo offers a quiet encounter with a civilisation that flourished in the Marche region during the first millennium BCE. The Picenes left no written records, but their tombs speak volumes. This burial ground, anchored by a large tumulus from the sixth century BCE, contained two chariots, a striking emblem of status and ritual among a people who valued martial display and the passage to an afterlife equipped for travel. The tumulus, a man-made mound of earth and stone, would have dominated the landscape, a visible marker of a society that honoured its elite with grand, enduring gestures. Today, the site sits among pines, the silence broken only by wind and birdsong. It is a place where the distant past feels close, tangible in the soil and the shadows beneath the trees.
