Palazzo Vescovile

On the north side of Piazza Benedetto XIII, the Palazzo Vescovile forms part of a composed ecclesiastical frontage, alongside the Diocesan Seminary (now housing the Civic and Chapter Museums), the Church of Purgatory, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The palace rises four storeys above ground, its load-bearing masonry structure rendered in plaster and topped with a flat roof. The facade is an exercise in sober dignity: vertical rhythm is established by the rectangular windows of the first and second floors, each set within a plain frame and projecting sill. There is no flourish, no Baroque excess, just the calm, repetitive geometry of a building designed for authority rather than display. One imagines generations of bishops glancing out from these orderly apertures onto the piazza below, perhaps grateful that their official residence, at least, required no architectural dramatics to make its presence felt.
