Palazzo Renzi-Fornara

In Vercelli, the Palazzo Renzi-Fornara occupies its trapezoidal site with a quiet, four-square assurance. Rising five storeys under a pitched roof, it is a building of the type that once housed both family and business. The principal facade along via Scipione is distinguished by a loggia of round arches, supported on moulded corbels, a common feature in palazzi of a certain ambition, offering shelter and outlook. Beyond the two residential units, the building also contains two carriage houses, or rimesse, a practical reminder of an era when a household’s status was measured in horseflesh and wheeled transport. The whole is solid, unshowy, and precisely what a provincial palazzo should be: a statement of civic standing made in stone and stucco, rather than in marble and bombast.
