palazzo, plurifamiliare, con supportico

This is a rectangular palazzo, a multi-family dwelling of a type common in Italian historic centres. It is attached to the Mother Church along one of its long sides, a practical arrangement that speaks to the dense, layered urban fabric of the old town. The building rises three levels, one of them semi-basement, with the ground floor notably taller than the two above. This lower level was the domain of storage, cellars and artisan workshops, while the upper floors were given over to residential use.

The façade on Corso Roma tells a story of long habitation. The architraved window frames hint at a late Renaissance foundation, while the ground-floor openings are a later, 19th-century insertion. The masonry is a patchwork of styles: rough, irregular stonework at the base, irregular courses on the top floor, much of it now plastered. Inside, vaulted ceilings survive in the passageway, while the rest is floored with flat wooden beams. The roof, its main structure of timber, is tiled with traditional coppi. The building now contains thirteen residential units, two storerooms and one dilapidated property.
