Palazzo Pesarini

This is a palazzo of the old school, built to impress without shouting about it. Its main façade is of bare stone, with two arched entrances framed by pilasters and stone cornices. The principal door leads to a stone staircase, lit from two sides, with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and cross-vaults on the landings; the floor is laid with graniglia tiles. The corridor runs under a barrel vault, with lunettes over the doors. A secondary entrance gives onto a secret staircase, its sandstone steps carried on brick vaults, a reminder that a great house kept its own discreet passages.

Three orders of windows, each with stone jambs and sills, rise to a moulded cornice beneath a tiled roof. The shutters and window frames bear painted decoration. On the piano nobile, rooms are ornamented with stucco, some touched with pure gold; fireplaces are of stone or marble. The principal salon rises through two storeys, with a gallery running around it at first-floor level, linking the rooms. Its shallow vault is a timber frame with lath and lime plaster; the walls are divided by paired pilasters. Two large paintings, set in stucco frames, hold the eye.
