Palazzo Norante-Vaccarella

This is a palazzo of determined asymmetry. Its plan, far from a neat rectangle, is a composition of two distinct blocks separated by a lower building, all unfolding around a courtyard open to the south. The ground floor is a study in contrasts: a wide, round-arched portal leads into this open court, while a second, finely worked arch, its keystone carved, ushers you into a closed courtyard on the right. The façades are given rhythm by the window frames; the ground floor and the building’s sides are clad in bold, rusticated stonework. The cornice above shifts from a row of corbels on the left block to a clean, smooth line on the right. The whole is capped by a hipped roof. Inside, the palazzo is divided into ten dwellings, a shop, and five storerooms, a palazzo that was home, workplace, and warehouse all at once.
