Palazzo Mozzagrugno

Palazzo Mozzagrugno presents a soberly elegant neoclassical face to the street, its stone base projecting just enough to anchor the composition. The ground floor is rhythmically ordered: two round-arched portals flank three semicircular windows, all linked by a continuous stringcourse. The left portal leads to the Teatro Garibaldi, the right to the Palazzo di Città. Above, five French windows with modillioned trabeations alternate with stone pedestals supporting paired Doric half-columns, while a frieze of triglyphs and metopes runs beneath the cornice.

Inside, the entrance hall is covered by a shallow barrel vault with four lunettes. At its centre, the city’s coat of arms is frescoed. This hall opens onto a portico of five bays, the first three giving onto an internal courtyard, the fourth containing the staircase. The portico is cross-vaulted. To the right, the building once housed the rich Biblioteca Comunale “Ruggero Bonghi”, now given over to offices. Several commemorative plaques remain. The whole is a model of its type: a palazzo that is at once a private residence, a civic passageway, and a repository of local memory.
