Palazzo Margarucci

This is a palazzo that knows its own mind, standing free on three sides and presenting a different face to each of the three streets it commands: the long flanks along via Cesare Battisti and vicolo delle Carceri, the shorter prospect onto via di Porta Orientale. Only on its fourth side does it deign to neighbour the Palazzo Servanzi Confidati. The building is a rectangle in plan, its heart a porticoed courtyard open to the east. From this colonnade, one enters the entrance hall and the staircase that distributes the upper floors. The perimeter walls, mostly of brick, are a study in discontinuity, with a double order of pilasters in the internal courtyard. Below ground, on the ground floor, mezzanine and first floor, vaults; above, wooden floors and roofs of timber and terracotta tiles. A structure that has grown, not simply been built.
