palazzo Landolina di Sant'Alfano

Palazzo Landolina di Sant'Alfano is a palace built around a courtyard, a classic Italian palazzo type. From the entrance hall, covered by a cross vault and a lunette barrel vault, you reach the inner court. This is arranged on two levels, with the ground-floor rooms distributed around it. The first floor is reached by the main staircase in the hall, an external staircase in the garden’s north-west corner, and an entrance on Via Montuoro; this last also gives access to the second level of the eastern wing. A staircase next to the main stair’s final flight leads to the second floor of the southern wing. The courtyard is separated from the hanging garden by a parapet pierced with oval elements bearing floral decorations. To east and west, the court is bounded by facades: each has a central portal framed by atypical pilasters. These pilasters, rotated where they meet the garden, heighten the whole ensemble’s theatrical effect. The west facade is merely a closing curtain wall for the garden; the east, articulated over two levels, defines the spaces beyond.
