palazzo Impellizzeri

Palazzo Impellizzeri occupies a long, rectangular block on Via della Maestranza, its form more intricate than its street front suggests. Behind the principal façade, wings of varying heights extend backwards, clustering around a central entrance hall in a loose U-shaped plan. The ground floor unfolds in a logical sequence of near-rectangular rooms, aligned with the street frontage, while the spaces behind the hall are arranged in two neat parallel rows. One of these contains the staircase.

Upstairs, the grander rooms overlooking the street give way to a series of smaller chambers, served by long corridors. The building is carried by a regular grid of load-bearing walls. The staircase is vaulted; the first-floor ceilings are false vaults. At ground level, the floors have been lowered with recently installed false ceilings. The structure speaks of a practical, hierarchical layout, public display at the front, service and circulation tucked discreetly behind, typical of the urban palazzi that line the historic streets of this Sicilian city.
