Palazzo della Provincia di Chieti

The Palazzo della Provincia di Chieti is a building with multiple lives. Its main entrance on Piazza Umberto I occupies what was once a wing of the Convent of San Domenico, now partly given over to the Prefect’s private residence. The façade is an austere composition: rusticated stonework at ground level and along the corners, a round-arched portal flanked by three windows each side, and upper floors marked by seven openings, those of the piano nobile with balconies on corbels, the floor above with simpler windows. A moulded cornice finishes the whole. The provincial government’s wing, added in 1914 to a design by engineer Giulio Mammarella, fronts Corso Marrucino in a neoclassical manner. The police headquarters occupy the side wing. Beneath the porticoes, ground-floor shops include the historic Caffè Vittoria; above, the offices and reception rooms of the three institutions. The Prefect’s quarters contain several finely worked chambers, among them a meeting room and the so-called blue room.
