Palazzo del Comune

This is a palazzo built for civic business, a type of structure that across Italy often combined administrative function with a certain formal dignity. The building wraps around three sides of a deep rear courtyard, connected to the street-facing portico by a central entrance hall. The main staircase, reached from the courtyard, rises in the left wing. The outer walls are brick, with the ground floor partly opened by arcades on pillars. Inside, the portico is vaulted with cross-ribbed stonework, while the entrance hall has a flat ceiling. The main staircase also uses cross-vaults; the principal rooms on the first floor are mostly covered by shallow barrel vaults, with timber ceilings above. The roof is a pitched composition of clay tiles. It is a solid, workmanlike piece of urban architecture, the sort of building that once housed councils, magistrates, and archives, its layout a practical solution to the demands of public life.
