Palazzo Bontempo-De Vincenzo

This palazzo, trapezoidal in plan, rises three storeys above street level. Its masonry is of regular stone courses, a sober and practical choice for a townhouse of its type. The horizontal divisions are concrete and brick slabs, while the roof, its main structure of reinforced concrete, is pitched and covered with Marseille tiles, a pragmatic, mid-century solution.

The facade is its most deliberate feature. Two simple stone archways, their keystones and impost blocks carved with floral motifs, mark the ground floor. Flanking these are two or three windows at ground level; above, two orderly rows of seven windows each march across the upper storeys. This is an architecture of repetition and restraint, the kind of confident, unshowy design that characterises many Italian palazzi, built for family and business, not for the passer-by’s applause.
