palazzo Bombini

This is Palazzo Bombini, a three-storey Renaissance palazzo of regular rectangular plan, its roof a mix of slopes. The main façade faces Via Giostra Vecchia, while the rear elevation looks onto an internal courtyard enclosed by a garden. The front is composed with a sober regularity: windows on the first floor, then balconies ‘alla romana’ on the second. A broad entrance, barrel-vaulted, leads through to the courtyard. Here the logic loosens: the windows are no longer aligned, and the vertical circulation is handled by two staircases, each covered with small cross-vaults, rising at the sides. It is a building that speaks of the Renaissance fondness for order and symmetry on the public face, while allowing a more pragmatic, asymmetrical arrangement for the private domestic life within.
