The private chapel of Sicily's Norman kings, and one of the strangest, most beautiful rooms in Europe. Built by Roger II in the 1130s inside the royal palace of Palermo, it fuses three cultures that briefly coexisted on the island: Byzantine gold mosaics of Christ and the saints, a wooden ceiling carved by Muslim craftsmen in Islamic honeycomb muqarnas, and a Latin Christian plan. The mosaics glow in low light; the ceiling hides painted scenes of courtly life. It is the clearest surviving picture of Arab-Norman Sicily, when a Christian king ruled in Arabic, Greek and Latin at once.
