On the south-western lip of Monte Sant’Elia, the historic core of Roccaforzata clusters around a fortified residence that is its most notable monument. The castle’s rectangular plan encloses a 14th-century nucleus, substantially remade in the 15th and 17th centuries. The hill itself has been inhabited since antiquity; its steep slopes made it a natural stronghold, commanding views over an agricultural landscape intensively worked in Greek and Roman times. In the 15th century, an Albanian colony settled here. After the barons’ revolt against the king of Naples, the site passed to the royal demesne, then through various noble families, the Mathes, the Renesi, and later Domenico Ungaro, who sold it to the Chiurlya family, who held it until the early 19th century. Napoleonic law abolished feudalism, and Roccaforzata gained administrative autonomy. Its current name, meaning ‘strong rock’, dates from that period, a blunt description of its orographic character.
