Museo Civico

The Museo Civico occupies a palazzo whose design observes a strict axial symmetry: three blocks arrayed around the central axis, the middle volume rising higher than its flanking wings. A single staircase, aligned with the entrance hall, serves the whole building. The principal facade is its most deliberate statement. The main portal, cut in stone, is framed by a protiro, two columns supporting a balcony whose balustrade repeats the stonework in miniature, with colonnettes and a carved handrail. The other balconies are treated with equal care: their stone jambs are bush-hammered, and at the centre of each appears a shell motif. These are the details of a municipal building that wished to be taken seriously. Inside, the palazzo accommodates two shops and three residential units, a reminder that such buildings were never merely repositories for objects, but lived-in parts of the urban fabric.
