Mura di cinta in via dei Martiri

These fragmentary walls, standing along via dei Martiri, are a palimpsest of local building traditions. The visible masonry is conspicuously heterogeneous: sections of Roman-style opus caementicium with a brick facing sit alongside basements of stone ashlar courses, themselves banded with brick string-courses. Elsewhere, more recent reconstructions in exposed brick conceal reinforced concrete cores. The structure is crowned by a redendone, a projecting cornice typical of Teramo’s defensive architecture, designed both to hinder scaling and to decoratively frame the arrow slits below. The overall curtain wall is of excellent workmanship, characteristic of the region’s best practice. This is not a single, coherent monument but a layered record of repair and adaptation, where each phase of rebuilding speaks to a different threat or ambition. The gate itself is lost; what remains is the stubborn, piecemeal skeleton of a city’s perimeter, telling its story in brick and stone rather than in dates or names.
