Along the road, the arches run in a hard, repeating rhythm: a sequence of semicircular vaults cut from squared tufa blocks, supported by pillars with a stringcourse. Above this, a wall of sandstone ashlar, its surface marked by a cordonata, a shallow ramp of stone steps, designed for pack animals and foot traffic alike. The whole structure sits directly on the earth, unadorned, functional.

This is not a triumphal gate, but a practical one: a fortified passage through the town walls of Arquata del Tronto. In the medieval hill towns of central Italy, such gates were built more for control than ceremony, checkpoints on the steep roads that connected the mountain communities. The arches carried the road; the wall above held the town’s defences. The tufa and sandstone are local, the craftsmanship plain but precise. It is a piece of infrastructure, worn by centuries of mules, carts, and boots, still standing because it was built to last.
