Monastero di S.Chiara

The Monastery of St Clare is a three-storey building arranged around a square internal courtyard. Its main façade, rendered in plaster, overlooks a small piazza on via Arpi. The entrance is a trabeated stone portal, distinguished by a scrollwork decoration at its upper left corner. Such monastic complexes were typically designed for a life of prayer and work, with the cloister at the heart of daily routine.

Inside, the near-square courtyard presents on its left side a round-arched portal framed by half-columns, flanked by windows and a second, rectangular doorway of similar design. Above runs a six-bay loggia, its columns interspersed with a masonry balustrade of small pillars. This upper portico would have offered a sheltered walkway, connecting the monks’ cells and communal spaces. The architecture is sober and functional, its quiet geometry a deliberate contrast to the bustling city just beyond the monastery walls.
