Mensa Ovest foro di Veleia

In the western arm of Veleia’s forum portico, roughly halfway along, a marble table stands between two columns. The top is a single rectangular slab, reassembled from two large fragments, unadorned by any frame. It rests on two trapezophori, carved marble supports, each ornamented with lion’s paws and foreparts, though now heavily damaged, the details nearly effaced. A recessed fillet above the manes hints at some original uncertainty in how the tabletop and supports were joined; today, steel clamps and cement hold them together. The whole structure sits on a low marble base.

Flanking the table are two benches of pink Verona marble. Their seats are straight at the back, while the front and two-thirds of the sides are moulded with a sequence of torus, cavetto and fillet. The bench supports, also in pink marble, are decorated on the inner face with lion’s paws; the outer face is smooth. The southern bench and its supports are original.
