mariano, parrocchiale, Madonna di Termine

Three kilometres from Pentone, on the road from Catanzaro to the Sila, stands the Santuario della Madonna di Termine. The church is dedicated to the Virgin of Grace, and its name, 'Trache' or 'Termine', comes from the site itself, recorded on sixteenth-century Vatican maps. The local cult springs from a legend: the Madonna appeared to a peasant woman, Maria Madia, who found a painting of the Virgin and Child. When she took it to the parish priest at San Nicola, the image miraculously returned to the spot where the sanctuary now stands. Some trace the sacred origins to a Basilian chapel, with evidence of a church by the late 1700s. Between 1759 and 1762, the parish priest and two procurators enlarged and rebuilt the little church into the present sanctuary, as recorded in an epigraph. Earthquakes have since taken their toll, but in July 2000, it was declared a Marian parish sanctuary. A quiet, resilient place, rooted in local devotion.
