The Macellum of Pompeii stood on the Forum as the city’s main provision market, a commercial and social hub built in several phases. The earthquake of 62 AD caused significant damage, and archaeological excavations show that repairs were still incomplete when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. This unfinished state offers a rare, frozen snapshot of Roman daily life disrupted by disaster. Excavations have revealed the market’s layout, including a central courtyard surrounded by shops and a small temple, all preserved under volcanic ash. The Macellum is a tangible reminder of Pompeii’s bustling commerce and the sudden violence that ended it.
