Lupanar

The Lupanare Grande, also known as the Purpose-Built Brothel, is a ruined building from ancient Roman Pompeii. Its particular interest lies in the erotic paintings that adorn its walls, offering a direct glimpse into the city’s commercial and social life. Pompeii itself was closely associated with Venus, the Roman goddess of love, sex and fertility, a mythological figure intimately tied to prostitution. This small, two-storey structure, with its stone beds and explicit frescoes, stands as a remarkably preserved relic of everyday Roman commerce and desire.
