Parco archeologico di Liternum

The Parco archeologico di Liternum preserves the remains of a Roman colony founded in 194 BC on the low sandy coast between Cumae and the Volturnus river mouth, near Patria Lake. Though Livy records the town as unsuccessful, excavations show a Roman settlement persisted here until the 4th century AD. The site includes a forum, a basilica, and an amphitheatre, all set against the landscape of southern Campania. Its quiet, coastal location once dependent on Cumae now offers a tangible glimpse of Roman colonial ambition and its eventual decline.
