Liceo Ginnasio "Bernardino Telesio"

At the foot of a steep Cosenza hill, the Liceo Ginnasio "Bernardino Telesio" presents a stern, scholarly face to the world. Its principal front is a weighty Neoclassical pronaos, a temple-like porch facing north-north-east. Four pseudo-Tuscan columns and two broad antae support a smooth tympanum and a frieze decorated with medallions; the effect is one of sober civic gravity, not ecclesiastical flourish.

Beyond the ample portal lies an open courtyard, around which the classrooms are arranged. To the right and upstairs are the rooms of the state boarding school; to the left, a long rectangular wing houses more ground-floor classrooms, with two large pavilions above. The eastern facade is more functional: simple, unadorned windows at ground level, protected by grilles, are answered by windows with architraves and medallions on the first floor. At the centre, a projecting balcony loggia sits above a protruding portal. The building is a thorough, unshowy piece of Baroque-era institutional architecture, designed for purpose rather than pomp.
