This fortress, a product of the modern period in Italy, reveals its construction logic through contrasting materials and methods. The lower, semi-basement level is a solid mass of continuous brickwork, reinforced by an external stone facing. Above this, the second storey shifts to regular courses of squared stone, a deliberate change in both texture and intent. The only horizontal division between the crypt-like base and the chapel above is a barrel vault, a real, load-bearing arch of bricks set in opposition. The roof, a shell form with crossed ribs, completes this layered structure. It is a place where the engineering of defence and the geometry of worship meet in a single, unadorned statement in brick and stone.
