The so-called “Forum Boarium” in Pompeii is a misnomer, a remnant of 18th-century archaeology’s eager guesswork. When excavators broke ground here in 1755, they unearthed the bones of large bovids, cattle or oxen, and promptly christened the site a cattle market. The name has stuck, though it almost certainly describes something else entirely.
This sprawling insula in Regio II (II, 5) is, in truth, a puzzle. Its layout and structures resist easy categorisation. What the early diggers took for a commercial forum may well have been a grand private residence, a religious precinct, or some other civic complex. The animal remains could represent a sacrifice, a feast, or simply the detritus of daily life in a busy ancient town.
What remains is a lesson in archaeological humility: a site named for a hasty assumption, now known more for the story of its naming than for any certain function. It is a quiet, instructive corner of Pompeii, where the past refuses to be neatly labelled.
