Fontana della Terra

A fountain and washhouse carved from local stone, the Fontana della Terra in Bonefro is a sturdy, practical monument to communal life. Six arched bays, each with a lobed profile, are separated by prominent pilasters; above them runs a strong horizontal entablature. On the two central arches, this rises into a rectangular pediment, where an elliptical niche holds an inscription. Flanking pinnacles and scroll volutes frame a carved coat of arms bearing the bust of Saint Nicholas, the town’s patron saint, with his name incised below. Adjacent stands the rectangular stone washhouse, its fourteen basins arranged in two orderly rows. Such washhouses were once the social heart of a village, where water was not merely drawn but news exchanged. The fountain’s stonework, with its restrained ornament and clear hierarchy of forms, speaks to an era when public water sources were designed to be both functional and dignified.
