One of the first planned cities of modern Europe. Under the Este dukes in the 15th century, Ferrara added a vast grid of broad straight streets to its medieval core, the Addizione Erculea, a piece of Renaissance urban theory built at full scale. At its heart the moated Castello Estense still stands, brick towers and a drawbridge, with dungeons below where the dukes settled family quarrels. Ariosto wrote here, and the court was among the most cultured in Italy. A city designed as an idea, and largely still intact behind its walls.
