Ex-Convento di Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Ex-Convento di Santa Maria delle Grazie is a monastery built around a square cloister, its form dictated by the practical rhythms of communal religious life. The main structure rises over two floors, with a semi-basement only beneath the former church of San Francesco. This church, a simple hall plan, once opened directly onto the cloister; behind it lie the rooms that served as a sacristy. The cloister itself is a quadrangle, ringed by a two-storey portico onto which the old cells and common rooms face. At its centre, a cistern still marks the point where the community gathered its water. The building's load-bearing walls are of roughly dressed stone, while reconstructed sections are rendered in plastered brick and stone. The monastery roof is a double-pitch, hipped affair; the former church roof is a simple gable, and the bell-tower is topped flat. It is a place built for order, not for show.
