ex convento di San Francesco all'Immacolata

The spatial organism of this former convent arranges its rooms around a central cloister, now reduced to a courtyard since the arcades on its east, north and west sides were walled up. The rooms are regularly disposed across two levels. An entrance hall, set axially to the courtyard, introduces the open-air space and leads, via a corridor, to the main staircase that connects the building’s two floors. The convent was typical of its kind: a self-contained world of cloister, cells, refectory and chapter house, built for contemplation and communal life. Here, the muting of the arcades has turned the heart of the complex from a light-filled ambulatory into something more contained and private, a quiet, walled enclosure where the original rhythm of columns and arches is still legible in the masonry. The result is a space that feels both unfinished and complete, caught between its former purpose and its present silence.
