Ex Convento di S. Domenico

The Ex Convento di S. Domenico stands to the left of its namesake church, a sober C-shaped block in painted tufa rising three storeys around an internal courtyard. Its hipped roof caps what was once a working monastery, part of the Dominican network that spread across Italy from the thirteenth century onward. These orders favoured practical, unadorned architecture: cloisters for contemplation, dormitories for austerity, refectories for communal life. Here, the rough-hewn local stone, now tinted with age, speaks to that functional spirit. The courtyard would have been the convent’s quiet heart, a square of light and shadow where monks moved between prayer and labour. Today, the building’s solid geometry and muted surfaces recall a rhythm of days long stilled, though the space itself remains, open to reinterpretation. It is a structure built not for show, but for purpose, and that purpose lingers in its bones.
