Ex convento dei Celestini

The former convent of the Celestini keeps its own counsel. From the outside, it is a plain thing: walls of rough stone and brick, bound with mortar, the roof a simple slope of curved tiles. The austerity is deliberate, the architecture of a community that prized spiritual discipline over display.

Inside, however, the cloister tells a different story. At ground level, round arches run around the courtyard, supporting pointed cross-vaults that lift the eye upward. This mix of round and pointed forms speaks to the transitional moment in which the convent was built, when Romanesque certainties were giving way to Gothic ambition.

Upstairs, the monks’ cells line the first floor, small, unadorned rooms that once held little more than a bed and a desk. The building as a whole is a study in contrasts: rough-hewn outside, carefully articulated within; a place of retreat that nonetheless kept a watchful eye on the world beyond its walls.
