Ex Centrale Idroelettrica del Ponte

On the right bank of the Chienti river, hard by the Ponte del Diavolo, stands the ex Centrale Idroelettrica del Ponte, a former hydroelectric plant that speaks of an era when industry and infrastructure were carved directly into the landscape. The complex comprises an annexe and an access structure. The annexe, rectangular in plan (roughly 21 by 12 metres) and aligned north-south, is built in exposed masonry beneath a pitched roof. Its unadorned, functional form is typical of early twentieth-century industrial architecture, where purpose dictated design. The setting is striking: the river’s flow, once harnessed to generate power, now runs untroubled past the silent building. The nearby medieval bridge lends a curious temporal contrast, one structure ancient, the other a relic of modernity now itself historical. A place that rewards a quiet pause, to consider the layers of use and abandonment along this watercourse.
