Edificio con torre circolare

The Edificio con torre circolare stands as a component of San Severino’s ancient castle fortifications, part of a defensive network that once guarded one of the most sensitive border points against the neighbouring Ducato governed by the Da Varano family. For roughly three centuries, this ducal power dominated Camerino, making the castle’s watchtowers and walls a crucial frontier in the shifting allegiances of medieval Italy.

The structure itself is a compact, purposeful building arranged over two independent levels: a ground floor and a semi-basement. Its circular tower, a typical feature of medieval military architecture, was designed to deflect projectiles and provide all-round visibility. Like many such fortresses of the period, it prioritised function over ornament, thick stone walls, narrow openings, and a layout that could be defended even if the upper works were breached. Today, it offers a quiet, unadorned glimpse into the practicalities of border defence, where every stone was laid with an eye on the horizon.
