Edificio Abbaziale

On the northern side of the abbey church, this building marks the eastern boundary of the monastic complex. It rises two storeys above ground, and though much altered and rebuilt over the centuries, the ground floor still reveals its original layout with reasonable clarity, a series of rooms whose purposes can be dimly discerned. The upper floor tells a different story. Here, structural considerations allowed for more flexible arrangements, and all trace of the original internal divisions has vanished. It is now a single vast hall, its open roof trusses exposed, the walls scarred with patches of plaster, blocked openings and crude partitions. These faint, contradictory marks are the only record of the space’s long and piecemeal history, a palimpsest of later interventions that speak of changing needs, but with a voice grown indistinct.
