Convento di Santa Chiara

The ruined church of the Convento di Santa Chiara still reveals its Baroque bones. Originally a single nave with three chapels on each side, it also possessed a matroneum, a gallery for women, which ran along three sides, including a central section over the main entrance, supported by an arch against the inner façade. The front is crowned with an architraved tympanum. Above the handsome main portal, a niche once perhaps held a statue of the saint. Flanking the doorway are two further niches, closed by tall pilasters and decorated at the base with broad, characteristically Baroque corbels. The whole arrangement is satisfyingly symmetrical, a composed frontispiece for a monastic church now open to the sky. Monasteries of this period in Italy often balanced austere spirituality with a theatrical architectural language, and here the remnants speak clearly of that ambition, a quiet, dignified ruin where the geometry of faith still holds firm.
