Convento di S. Pietro alli Marmi

Convento di S. Pietro alli Marmi sits on a rectangular plan around a central cloister, the quiet heart of the place. Enter through the main arched portal, raised above the street, and you reach a vestibule that leads into the cloister itself, framed by the three convent wings and the church. On the ground floor, a covered portico runs beneath cross-vaults on round arches, their stone archivolt resting on square pillars. From here, you can reach the library and the Museo Africano, assembled by missionary friars. Upstairs, a barrel-vaulted corridor serves the cells that look over the cloister; a secondary staircase leads to a second floor with the same plan. The main façade is a two-storey central block, with an extra floor rising at each end for the side wings. The walls are tufa and mixed masonry, finished in smooth plaster; floors and roof are wooden trusses with tiles. It is a solid, unshowy building, built for routine and retreat.
