Convento di S. Agostino

The Convento di Sant’Agostino is a quadrilateral building arranged around a central portico, but time has not been kind. One wing is in a very poor state; another has partly collapsed. The cloister runs on three sides with two orders of porticos, the upper one having a narrower column spacing than the lower. The portico adjoining the church has only its lower order, though traces of the upper remain, probably removed for practical reasons. All arcades are now walled up. The lower portico’s octagonal pillars are of sandstone, with only hinted bases and capitals. The lower portico and sacristy are vaulted with cross-groined ceilings; the corridors of one surviving wing have barrel vaults, while other rooms keep simple wooden beams. The roof structure is timber, covered with tiles. Faded painted decorations still ornament the lower portico and sacristy, the last whispers of a once-functioning monastic life.
