Convento dei Padri Cappuccini

The shell of a Capuchin monastery, stripped to its essentials. What remains is the ground floor and a fragment of the upper storey, the walls built from rough, unshaped blocks of marly limestone, a local stone, practical and unadorned. In a few of the ground-floor rooms, the barrel vaults are still intact, their simple, continuous curves a reminder of how these spaces were once roofed. Monasteries of this order were typically austere, built for seclusion and prayer, and this ruin honours that spirit: no ornament, no flourish, just the stubborn geometry of load-bearing masonry. The building is a skeleton, but a telling one, the kind of place where you can read the logic of monastic life in the very thickness of the walls and the quiet persistence of the vaults overhead.
